Summary0000088: A shape library.
DescriptionWay to save shapes and glyphs to a library or toolbox, where you coul drag and drop them to form new glyphs.

- In example you could create and save umlauts, acutes , breves and so on there, same as lowercase 'a', and later drag and drop to form 'ä', 'á', 'â' and so on. Of course you'd have to edit and fix every glyph separately later on, but this would make things a bit faster and straight forward.

- Also it would be neat to be able to save partial letters, like stems, bowls, crossbars and arcs, which you could later combine to d's and b's...

- I think the later part might need some sort of boolean operation to merge two paths into one.

Sound pretty nice. I will start with the merging code and think some more about the shape library. I think copy and paste from another instance of Birdfont might be sufficient and use less space in the GUI.

Yep. Possibility to merge 'c' and separatedly created cedilla to 'ç' and all the bazillion characters that have the cedilla hanging under them would reduce repetitive and some what time consuming tasks quite a lot already.

I think the essence of this idea would be to be able to paste two or more shapes into one glyph, do so for the whole set of umlaut letters and then open them and edit oddities out later. (Does that even make any sense?)

You're right about keeping the UI as clutter free as possible. That is one of the things that makes this software such a pleasure to use.
- Maybe separate tab or floating widow to keep the parts in order?

I'm just kicking this around a bit. ;)

This makes sense but there are other alternatives.

C and cedilla have their own Unicode characters. Copy and paste from those two parts in to c cedilla can be automated with a command that assembles glyphs from their parts without the need of storing them in a shape library.

That automation thingy would actually make perfect sense! That would be the perfect solution for cedillas and umlauts and all the many things people want to hang on to basic latins.

In that light the shape library seems a bit overkill, doesn't it? Though it might still help when creating d, b, q, and p. Same stem and same bowl, (Well, almost.) just in different positions. but there aren't many of those.

BTW: Is there a way to search up certain character by it's name, description or Unicode code? Or simply typing the character? I always forget where the heck the euro-sign is. :D

Ctrl+F is the key binding for search.

I hope you don't mind If I keep on brainstorming here. ;)

I was thinking about that possible automation to combine existing glyphs to new ones. (¨+ A = Ä)

And then I thought it would be great to have few other mass or bulk operations available.

In example it would be nice to be able to select all or a bunch of already created glyphs in the overview tab and enter values for skew, scale or rotate for all of them at once, or set left, right or both bearings to all of them without clicking open every single one of them or going through spacing tab. These wouldnt have to be perfect, just a way to set some basic values for selected glyphs, that you can fine tune later on.

What do you think?

Good idea. Thanks.
